Red Light Camera Legislation

The
Libertarian Party of Florida, with 18,000 +/- registered voters in the State of Florida, feels legislation should be enacted based on fact rather than emotion. Red light camera legislation looks on the surface to be a good idea as no one
wants travelers in cars to run red lights, risking severe property damage and
the lives of others. In looking at the facts on this issue, we fully support
this legislation as evidence clearly shows it is a step in the right direction
to make intersection safer for Floridians without adding on-going costs to
counties and municipalities.

Last year, the University of South
Florida updated their previous 2008 study on the ineffectiveness of using red
light cameras at intersections[1]
and concluded better engineered intersections along with standardized yellow
light interval times would be more effective to reduce crashes.

When utilizing a red light camera
system several instances of municipalities and counties throughout the country
have been found[2] to
change the interval times of traffic lights to manipulate revenue streams[3]
and the Libertarian Party of Florida would like to see the legislature end this
practice.

The
effect of this legislation will standardize the yellow time interval for
traffic signals and the denoted time will save lives – more lives than red
light cameras.[4]
